Having a nightmare with shoes at the moment.

Needing a wider fit to get around a big toe joint. Any thoughts?

Shimano “wide” has been good to me and I do have flat and wide feet.

I have a a pair of older specialized Audux and the last version of the shimano sphyre both in wide and I’ll take the shimanos any day. I was warned when ordering the shimanos that they were “really wide” but I was coming off a pair of rc9’s in regular width so I ignored the warning.

If I could go back I would have made more of an attempt to try lakes as they come in 2 different wide options though.

I went from a wide R321 in 44 to a Regular 45 in the RC901, the 44e was too short and the 45e felt huuggeeee.

Bont offer their shoes in wide.
And if really necessary they have a custom fit.

Lake is what fits my wide feet. This is quite nice article on the subject: https://www.bikeradar.com/features/wide ... -the-best/
If you won't bother reading it all, at least check the "Wide vs High volume" section at least.

If the wide fit is necessary due to a particular bone protrusion instead of just a uniform width of the foot, custom might be better. I had a good experience with Luck, they have a detailed description for you to take your foot measurement to send to them, and they will follow up with further questions if they see something possibly amiss in your measurements. And their custom shoes are cheaper than some top end models of other brands.

The thing is that even if you do get the chance to try wide shoes in the shop, hot spots often don't set in till a certain mileage (for me, around 70km for my wide Bonts) so it's really tricky.

After a lot of different brands I've settled on Lake, really well made and solved all of my foot issues. CX237 and CX402.

Lake have a new CX 241 with a segmented upper that is great for odd, bony or bunioned feet. There’s minimal spill over of pressure from one segment to the next so it can form around protrusions much better than a classic shoe.

Looks odd though!

If you actually need wide, lake.
Most of the other brands just increase the volume and call it 'wide'

Bont, yes.
Shimano, no. Shimano increase midfoot but the toe still tapers sharply.

You didn't state where the width was needed. You said most other manufacturers do high volume not width, which is incorrect because shimanos are measurably wider at the ball of the foot.

Is the last actually wider? Don't believe so.

Wide Fit Shoes Options? - Weight Weenies (2024)

FAQs

What size is wide fit shoes? ›

Generally, a wider-fit shoe has a toe box which is a quarter of an inch bigger than the width of a standard-size shoe.

Should you go down a size in wide fit shoes? ›

Because our shoes are wider and deeper it may mean that you come down a size compared to the shoes you have been wearing. This is quite common and it is because our shoes are wider, so your feet have more space and don't need the extra length.

What size is considered wide feet? ›

For women, a men's Medium (D) is considered a Wide width, while anything E or bigger is Extra Wide. For men, Wide typically starts at E and anything greater than 2E is considered Extra Wide. Not all brands will offer widths in every increment, and 2E/4E are the most common.

How do you know if you need wide width shoes? ›

First, you can try on a pair of shoes and see how they feel. If the shoes feel tight or pinch at the sides, you likely have wider feet. If there is a lot of extra space or the shoes feel loose, you may have narrower feet. Another way to tell is by looking at the shape of your foot.

Is 4 inches a wide foot? ›

A regular or medium foot width is a little less than half of your foot size in inches. For example, if you wear a size 7 shoe, then a regular foot width would be around 3.45 inches, whereas a wide size 7 foot would measure anywhere from 3.75 to 4.25 inches.

Can I wear wide fit shoes with normal feet? ›

Yes, you can wear wide shoes even if you don't have wide feet. They provide extra room for your toes to move comfortably, reducing the risk of blisters and foot pain, but be careful about them being too wide, as that could lead to other problems. Footwear should always be comfy but also snug and supportive.

Should I go up half a shoe size if I have wide feet? ›

If you have wide feet, you should buy shoes a half size larger. This is because shoe width increases slightly as shoe length increases. A shoe that's half a size longer will often be a little bit wider. However, it's important to try on shoes before you buy them to make sure they fit comfortably.

How much should you size up for wide feet? ›

However, wide shoes may not be the most comfortable on your feet or the most secure and supportive. A half size up is a good option if you just want a little more room, but whether to go wider or just bigger will depend on the style of the shoe and how long you will be wearing it.

What is considered a wide foot for a woman? ›

If the measurement is more than 3 5/16 inches, you may have wide feet and may need to consider purchasing shoes with a wider width. The width of your foot in centimeters is not important.

What does wide fit mean in shoes? ›

A wide width or wide fitting shoe will have the same length as a regular-sized shoe, but the toe box and forefoot width are wider to accommodate a wider foot. Wide-fitting shoes often have greater depth because wider feet are usually taller or deeper.

What is the size difference between wide and regular shoes? ›

At only about ⅛ of an inch difference, the size of a wide shoe and a regular width shoe is not easily noticeable by the human eye. However, it's the difference between total comfort and constant pain. When it comes to giving your foot a bit more room, this tiny fraction can make all the difference in comfort.

What is shoe width D or EE? ›

D = standard fitting. E = wide fitting. EE = extra-wide fitting. EEE = ultra-wide fitting. For more information, check out our women's shoe size guide.

How do you measure for wide fit? ›

To measure the width of your foot, stand on a firm surface and wrap a flexible tape measure around the widest part of your foot – near the big and little toe joints.
