ELLWOOD F. FRYE

Ellwood F. Frye, a lifelong resident of Duncannon, went to his final resting place on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

He was born Dec. 31, 1931.

He retired from Keystone Railway Equipment Company in 1984.

He was a member of the National and Pennsylvania Trappers Association and Duncannon Sportsman Association, where he enjoyed raising and stocking trout in tri-county streams.

He was an avid high school sports fan for Susquenita and enjoyed cruising with his wife on their Honda Goldwing.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Jessie; a brother, Charles of Nebraska; a daughter, Gail and husband Gary Brinton; a son, Farley and wife Janet Frye; six grandchildren, Corilee and Pam Brinton, Dustin and Tiffany Frye, Shelley and Jess Horn; nine great-grandsons; and 11 stepgrandchildren.

DOROTHY M. BRODISH

Dorothy M. Brodish went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 26, 2024. She was in Idaho with her youngest daughter.

She lived a full life and always said, “Life has seasons, and seasons change,” and she lived through many seasons in her 95 years.

She was born to Charles and Bertha Miller on Jan. 14, 1929. She grew up in Altoona, the oldest of seven children, with one brother and five sisters.

She graduated from Altoona High School and attended Shippensburg State College, graduating with a degree in education.

She married Eric Brodish in 1947, and they had four children. She was a wonderful homemaker who enjoyed gardening, baking, and sewing and enjoyed passing on her knowledge to her children and grandchildren. She remarried in 1980 to Mark Shindel and was married for 18 years before he passed in 1998.

She had a servant’s heart and always was helping others, whether with a warm meal, rides to church, or a place to stay.

She taught at Thompsontown Elementary School for 30 years. After retirement, she served others by being a Missionettes’ leader at Newport Assembly of God church and through her bed and breakfast, where she hosted visitors, missionaries, and those in need from all over the world. She always said she was a “go-go girl,” not wanting to slow down and always looking for ways to help others.

Surviving are three children, Salyn Stover and husband Mike Stover, Daren Brodish and his wife Sharon Brodish, and Dea Story; nine grandchildren, Amy Brodish, George Brodish, Joseph Brodish, Amanda Smith and her husband Daniel Smith, Michael Curl, Jan Gibboney, Melissa Wilson and husband Jake Wilson, Stephanie Hysek and husband David Hysek, Jennifer Truitt and husband Wade Truitt; and eight great-grandchildren.

Her second husband, Mark Shindel, and her eldest son, Adrian Brodish, preceded her in death.

A celebration of life was held May 14 in Boyer Family Funeral Home, New Bloomfield.

KENNETH E. HARTZ

Kenneth E. Hartz passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2024.

He was the loving husband of Bernice and the caring father of Janice. He was the son of Frederick and Pauline and the brother of Frederick Jr.

He was a graduate of Shippensburg State College, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He was a retired West Shore public school educator. Coach Hartz was a dedicated track and field and field hockey coach for decades, and a PIAA official.

In Idaho, he was employed as a U.S. Forest Service seasonal, served as a museum docent, volunteered as an ambulance driver and EMT, and presided as library board president.

In Arizona, he volunteered at Kartchner Caverns State Park, in the U.M.C. choir, and for the Green Valley Sheriff’s Auxiliary Volunteers.

WAYNE L. MYERS

Wayne L. Myers, 84, of Landisburg died on Sunday, May 5, 2024, in Carlisle.

He was born March 18, 1940, in Lisburn. He graduated from West Shore High School, Lemoyne, in 1958 and proudly served with the Navy and Marine Corps from 1958 to 1962. He retired from PPG Industries in Mount Holly Springs and began his career as an auctioneer in 1988. In 1995 he opened Myer’s Variety Outlet, Landisburg, which he operated with his wife until the time of his death.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Louise Nelson Myers; a stepson, Norman Kuhn (Crystal) of Virginia; two brothers, Carl (Nancy) of Loysville and William Myers of Shermans Dale; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Evelyn and Chet Sherman, he was preceded in death by a sister Evelyn Pottiger.

JANET A. GOODLING

Janet A. Goodling, 81, of Tuscarora Twp., Millerstown, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

She was born Sept. 22, 1942, in Newport to Herbert and Marie (Hoffman) Barrick.

She was the widow of Gary A. Goodling.

Surviving are a sister, Mary Lou Dudley of Newport; four children, Jami Dudley, Jeffrey Dudley, Jonnie Imboden and Jennifer Treaster; and a granddaughter, Michelle Hartman.

She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Goodling.

WILLIAM J. PLANT, SR.

William J. “Bill” Plant, Sr., of Duncannon, PA, formerly of Hatfield and Red Lion, PA, passed away surrounded by his family at UPMC West Shore Hospital, in Mechanicsburg, PA, on Sunday May 5, 2024 at the age of 91.

Bill was born April 14, 1933 in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Walter and Grace (Creagan) Plant. He grew up in Chicago and was a graduate of St. Rita’s Catholic School. Following his graduation, he served as a Military Police Officer in the United States Army. Bill later pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He worked as an Engineer for Link Belt / FMC, initially in Chicago and later in Colmar, PA, for 38 years, until his retirement.

Bill had 54 years of a loving marriage with his wife Joan M. (Shaffer) Plant prior to her passing on June 11, 2013. They enjoyed many years of traveling together and spending time with their large family. He was also an avid woodworker, making furniture and toys for his children and grandchildren. Bill was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Duncannon, PA.

Bill’s memory will be cherished by his family, including his six children, William J. Plant, Jr. of East Norriton, PA, Ellen McCollum and her husband, Allan, of Duncannon, PA, Karen Baggett and her husband, David of Mt. Bethel, PA, John Plant of West Chicago, IL, Joseph Plant and his wife, Louise, of Swoyersville, PA, and Walter Plant of Phoenixville, PA; six grandchildren, Christine Fejeran, and her husband, Eric, Daniel McCollum, Jamie Sitler and her husband, Barry “Jake”, Benjamin McCollum, and his wife, Lindsay, Alexandria Plant, and her husband Kamil Wieczerak, and Jessica Baggett; and his great-grandchildren, Fletcher Sitler, Wilder Sitler, Dylan McCollum and a great granddaughter, Skylar McCollum, due later this year. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Hellen, Grace, and Jean and two brothers, Walter and Robert.

Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. on Friday May 17, 2024 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 901 North High Street, Duncannon, followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Fr. Dijo Thomas, MSFS, as Celebrant. A luncheon will follow the Mass. Inurnment, next to his wife, in the Trinity Lutheran Church Columbarium, Lansdale, PA, will be at convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his name may be made to either St. Bernadette Catholic Church c/o Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 121 William Street, Marysville, PA 17053 or to the American Heart Association at https://www.heart.org.

Bill’s enjoyment of his time with his family, his zest for learning through doing, his love of sharing a bottle of wine with friends and family and his sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
