Max Verstappen wins the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix
The reigning world champion comes out on top after a truly raucous race in Montreal that included a pair of order shuffling safety cars and more than a few lead changes.
He's joined by Lando Norris and George Russell on the podium, followed by Hamilton, Piastri, Alonso, Stroll, Ricciardo, Gasly and Ocon in P10.
"Not easy but we did it," Verstappen says over the radio, while Russell sounds dejected. "Ugly race on my behalf," he says.
And that's a wrap in Montreal!

That's Max Verstappen, referring to the groundhog who picked Lap 32 as the right time to head onto the track. The Red Bull driver managed to avoid hitting him — a collision would have been as rough for his race as for the groundhog's life —and George Russell confirmed the animal scampered to safety.
The race in one chart
Look at how the top three lines intertwine, it's easy to spot the safety car periods that shook things up. Also note Kevin Magnussen's wild ride up the standings as he started on the wet tire, only to crash back down after a slow pit stop for the inters.

Max Verstappen is inevitable
For all the chaos and drama in that race, Max Verstappen wins it. GP says on the radio it "kept you on your toes." No kidding. Those are the kinds of wins that make championships.
Hamilton onto the podium
At least for now, with four laps left.
Hamilton's been the less noticed Mercedes this weekend after Russell's thrilling pole and early lead. But the younger Brit's missed challenge to Piastri led his teammate by, and now Hamilton's picked off the Australian courtesy of DRS.

Russell briefly went off while challenging Piastri for P3, and his teammate swoops into P4, with Piastri now 1.1 seconds ahead of the Mercedes.
Fastest lap hot potato
Norris does the fastest lap, then Russell tops him, then Verstappen takes it, at 1:16.625. Eight laps to go now.
And Verstappen's already pulling away

His lead is up to 1.8 seconds, putting him out of DRS range. He hasn't been perfect today, but he's in prime position to deliver a win after a feisty race.
And we're back on
11 laps to go, Verstappen leads Norris, Piastri and Russell.

A really close finish is on the cards

It's time for another installment of Verstappen versus Norris for the victory. Verstappen has been in control for much of this race, but isn't happy with how his car is riding over the curbs. It's a chance for Norris to fight for his second career grand prix win.

It's another safety car! Albon's car is stranded, meaning we'll have to go behind the safety car for a while. The clash with Sainz has ended his race.

That's Pérez's race surely over. He's going slowly with a wrecked rear wing. Not clear yet what happened. No sign of a yellow flag or safety car yet though.

The whole field's getting faster now

The drying track and the warmed up slick tires have produced a sea of green on the timing sheets as everyone gets faster and faster. The fastest time so far (courtesy of Russell) is seven seconds off the top quali lap, but expect that gap to close some.

Wow, that was close! Norris emerged from the pits just ahead of Verstappen, but his cold tires light up and Verstappen is able to ease past and retain the lead. Oh so close. Norris is now under pressure from Russell and Piastri behind. So so close.

After Gasly proved the hard tire's quicker than the intermediates, Hamilton, Alonso, Tsunoda and a few others down the grid have followed. Verstappen, Russell and Norris are still on the intermediates but are sure to come in soon.

Ferrari's told him to retire the car, unsurprising given the sea of blue flags the Monaco winner had faced in the past few minutes. It's his first retirement of the year.
