DIY Fascinators - Makes these fun hats using dollar store supplies (1)The royal wedding is only days away and there’s nothing funner than donning your craziest hat or fascinator and camp out in front of TV with a ton of junk food. One simple trip to the dollar store and $12 later we had all that we needed to make 4 different fascinators. If you’re not getting ready for the royal wedding, store this DIY Fascinator idea away for crazy hat day, tea parties or a Kentucy Derby party.Once we got started making them the supplies we used varied from everything to a bug net to a loofah but the base is always the same.DIY Fascinators - Makes these fun hats using dollar store supplies (2)We made these DIY fascinators using simple headbands from the dollar store and a paper plate. Cut an oval from the paper plate, put to slits in it and slide it onto the headband. Once you have it in place, put a few dots of hot glue to keep it in place.Once your base is ready it’s time to put on your creativity hats and go wild.DIY Fascinators - Makes these fun hats using dollar store supplies (3)This was our supply haul from The Dollar Tree. I tried to look for anything that might add height, texture or netting. Some of the items I picked up to make fascinators were:

  • fake flowers (including some that looked like purple butterflies)
  • loofahs
  • a blue flower lei
  • feathers
  • a feather boa
  • a pink ballerina skirt
  • a blue bug net

How to make a fascinator with dollar store supplies

One of the things that I used that probably isn’t associated with fancy hats was a loofah. A few snips made it fall apart and then I had the perfect netting material to use. On top of that I added some purple and pink feathers and then glued on several of the fake flowers I got at The Dollar Tree that look more like butterflies than flowers.DIY Fascinators - Makes these fun hats using dollar store supplies (4)My goal with these fascinators was to have fun and be extra gaudy. If you want to go smaller and simpler, it’s up to you.The butterfly flowers move and sway when you walk, which is extra fun for binging on snacks while watching the royal wedding. The next one my kids got all excited when they saw me pick up the butterfly net but I had to burst their bubble that I was using it on one of the hats. However the blue hat wound up being everyone’s favorite so I think they’re OK with it.DIY Fascinators - Makes these fun hats using dollar store supplies (5)To make the blue hat I cut up a butterfly net, using the net part on the front of the hat similar to a birdcage veil. Next I pulled apart a blue lei and used the flowers to make an entire clump of blue flowers. Finally I glued teal feathers onto some of the long fake grass pieces that came with the fake flowers I had bought and attached them to the fascinator.DIY Fascinators - Makes these fun hats using dollar store supplies (6)The white one was made with a white loofah, a feather boa and a white roses. I also used more of the fake grass pieces to make the loops that you commonly see in fascinators.DIY Fascinators - Makes these fun hats using dollar store supplies (7)Believe it or not, the pink one was made with a tutu from the dollar store. With flowers and feathers added, it’s the perfect bit of bling to make it really stand out.

A few notes about DIY fascinators….

  • You will have a blast making these
  • I used hot glue to quickly assemble these. Anytime you use really cheap items, like ones from the dollar store, they melt easier or conduct heat easier. It’s much easier to get glue gun burns when working with cheap products. If you’re going to make these with children, either have them tell you where to put the items and you glue them down or use a low temperature glue gun.
  • These would make for a great party idea! Throw a ton of items out on a table and have a girls night making super gaudy fascinators.

I know you’re going to have a wonderful time making these fascinators or another fun hat to wear for your event.DIY Fascinators - Makes these fun hats using dollar store supplies (8)
